Description

“Balanta Memories of Freedom” is a product of the Convergent Stories Scholarship for Creators of Black Afro-Colombian, Raizales and Palenqueras Communities – “Year of Freedom 2021” offered by the Stimulus Call of the Ministry of Culture.

There is a historical debt with the Afro-descendant populations of Colombia in the consolidation of multidisciplinary research that rescues the voice of the communities and that makes it possible to identify the human, historical, economic and population projection aspects of these human groups.

The Balanta families, among other Afro-descendant families in Colombia, who preserved in their surname the African ethnicity that represented them, are currently disjointed from the Afro-descendant territories of the country where they live.

This is an important project for the community because it reveals the living conditions of African diaspora families that have persisted over time, bearers of ancestral knowledge, spiritual secrets and creators of various manifestations of Afro-Colombian cultural heritage.
